Na vida urbana moderna agimos muitas vezes sem estar emocionalmente envolvidos em nossas ações ou fazemos várias coisas ao mesmo tempo, às vezes sem percebermos que as diferentes atividades têm objetivos distintos e acabam se esbarrando.
A prática de Mindfulness passou a fazer parte da medicina comportamental a partir dos programas de redução de estresse de Kabat-Zinn (1992) como uma forma específica de atenção plena – concentração no momento atual, intencional, e sem julgamento. Considerando que as pessoas funcionam muito em um modo que o autor chama de piloto automático, concentrar-se no momento atual significa estar em contato com o presente, trazer a atenção plena para a ação no momento atual e não estar envolvido com lembranças ou com pensamentos sobre o futuro. O objetivo da abordagem é, por meio da prática de Mindfulness, convidar os participantes do programa a tornarem-se conscientes de todos os pensamentos e sentimentos que surgem na experiência humana e de aceitá-los como parte do fluxo de ser humano, aprendendo que devem ser reconhecidos como simplesmente pensamentos e sentimentos e nada mais, e responder de forma mais receptiva a essas experiências.
Linehan (1993) introduz o treino de mindfulness no princípio do treino de habilidades sociais. Os componentes do mindfulness são:
(1) Observar: estar atento a eventos, a emoções e a diversos aspectos do próprio comportamento.
(2) Descrever: relato verbal dos eventos e das próprias reações a eles, sem avalia-los
(3) Participar plenamente sem promover atividades paralelas como racionalizar ou justificar.
Mindfulness constitui uma inovação na prática clínica e representa um acréscimo no arsenal de técnicas terapêuticas disponíveis.
