A Acceptance and Commitment Therapy(ACT) é baseada em compreender um comportamento dentro de um contexto, que envolve o ambiente e a história do indivíduo, com intenção de mudar o sofrimento, maximizar o potencial humano para uma vida com qualidade, plena e significativa. Desenvolvida dentro de um quadro teórico e filosófico, a ACT é uma intervenção psicológica única com base empírica que utiliza estratégias de aceitação e Mindfulness, juntamente com estratégias de compromisso e mudança comportamental, para aumentar a flexibilidade psicológica (i.e., a capacidade de se contatar com o momento presente plenamente como ser humano consciente, e com base nas circunstâncias atuais, alterar ou persistir numa conduta ao serviço de valores escolhidos e assim diminuir o sofrimento).
Quem tem um sofrimento evita situações que o causam. Mas, como não podemos controlar todas as nossas emoções é preciso entender que, em alguns momentos, sentiremos sensações que não são as mais agradáveis. É preciso aceitar a existência dessas sensações, compreendendo que elas são transitórias e que não é preciso evitar uma situação que as cause porque algumas coisas mudam e outras, não, e cada pessoa precisa descobrir a melhor forma de lidar com ambos os tipos de situações.
Na Terapia é realizado um autodescobrimento para compreender quais são os valores mais estimados pelo indivíduo e o que pode motivá-lo a continuar seguindo em busca dos seus objetivos. É importante ir em busca do que se quer alcançar de fato. É o compromisso de alinhar os comportamentos, baseando-se no que se quer conquistar, aprendendo que há pensamentos que funcionam como um “sistema de defesa” do cérebro quando este entende alguma situação como perigosa. Uma vez livre da luta contra as próprias avaliações, pensamentos e sentimentos, as pessoas podem agir de modo produtivo sobre seu ambiente.
O principal objetivo da Terapia da Aceitação e Compromisso é proporcionar um aumento da flexibilidade psicológica e, assim, diminuir o sofrimento.
